Common Home Accidents

Your home is supposed to be your safe place, so many times we can forget about the dangers that exist. If you are aware of and keep in mind some of these common household dangers, it can help to prevent accidents from happening.

Carbon monoxide poisoning causes many harmful symptoms, including headache, confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, shortness of breath and unconsciousness. Needless to say, carbon monoxide poisoning is very dangerous. One of the main ways that carbon monoxide gets into a home is from an old or broken furnace or from a gas appliance. In order to prevent this from causing problems for anyone living in your home, it is crucial that you have a carbon monoxide detector near where your furnace is located and another one near your bedrooms. If you keep up with routine maintenance and service on your gas appliances, this should prevent a carbon monoxide leak from ever occurring.

Slips and falls are another very common home accident and they can be caused by a variety of things. There may be water leaking from your refrigerator, which caused you to slip and fall. It is important that you pay attention to your refrigerator and call a repair person if you notice any water or if it seems like it is not functioning as it should be. Another reason for falls could be if you have uneven flooring or a carpet that is loose. If a floorboard has come loose, you will want to get that repaired and if any carpeting is loose, you can use double-sided tape to help keep it in place.

Another way that you can prevent falls in your home could simply be to improve the lighting. If you keep your home well-lit, it may reduce accidents that happen at night. You can switch out your light bulbs for LED lights, which are also more energy-efficient. Stairways are often neglected in terms of lighting, so you will want to make sure you do have lighting near your stairways.

Also with stairways, it is important that you have a guard rail on all stairways in your home. This is especially important if you have young kids or anyone elderly who live in or visit your home. You also want to make sure that your guard rail is tight enough and that the screws do not loosen. If you notice that they have become loose, you will want to tighten it immediately so it does not cause an accident.

Similarly, you may want to have a guard rail installed in your bathtub. A mounted side rail gives extra support for helping you to climb in and out of the bath. Bath mats are another way that you can keep your bathroom safer and you want to make sure you are using non-slip mats in your bathtub and outside of your tub. Bathroom floors can be very slippery since they are likely to get wet and you want to make sure that you are being extra safe when getting in and out of the bath or shower.
